Custom Search

SEO Melbourne - SubmitWhat do I have to do to have my web site show up in the search engines? This is a question our customers at SEO Melbourne repeat often.
It seems a simple question but unfortunately being indexed is a very complex issue.
There is a difference between indexing and positioning. Sometimes certain things are used as synonyms when it comes to SEO.
Let's analyse these terms.

Indexing: being present on the search engines.

Indexing is the action of inserting your site in the database of a search engine.
Another term often used is submission.
Being present doesn't mean necessarily being in a good position. It simply means that search engines know your site exists.
Think about a lottery: indexing is like buying a ticket. Having a ticket doesn't mean you will win, but it is needed to have a chance to win.

Optimisation: improve the possibilities.

The optimisation consists in modifying a site to have it positioned better in the results of a search.
Let's say, you know which word you want to be found with. Optimisation means to build a page that will have a better position.
Using the example of the lottery again, let's suppose that there is a method to improve the possibility to win just choosing numbers the right way. Optimisation does exactly that. It gives your numbers more possibilities to win compared to other numbers picked by chance.

Positioning or Ranking: being at the top of the results.

The term "positioning" - or search engine ranking - refers to the results obtained using certain criteria related to a word or a group of words.
Positioning is the final goal of many webmasters who try and reach the top 10 for a specific keyword.

Marketing and Promotion

Marketing represents the operations done to obtain certain results. This includes indexing, optimisation, paid campaigns and so forth. All of these terms give the evidence that a result is not limited to indexing, optimisation or good poositioning.
To be successful you need to improve the way search engines interact with your site, so people looking for what you offer will find you more easily.
