HTML documents are text files with the extension .html (or .htm) which give browsers the information (text formatting, position of the images and so forth) to be displayed. It is possible to write a HTML document just using a simple text editor like Notepad.
But using the HTML elements search engines look for is not enough: it must be done correctly. SEO Melbourne does it for you.
<title> tag
Use 5-7 words. 5 is best. Keep some keywords (not more than 3) at the beginning. Not longer than 60 characters.
H1Repeat the keywords at the top of the page as closer to the <body> tag as possible. Insert them in a H1 header. 200 characters maximum, suggested 150.
H2 - H6
Use keywords in these subtitles, where it makes sense. Don't stuff the content with excessive keywords in the headings.
METATAG <DESCRIPTION>
The content of the metatag <description> is shown in the search results. If not defined, the spiders will use the first lines of the text they find on the page. If you don't want your link to be only visualised but clicked as well, make sure you always define this metatag. Use your keywords (not more than 3) at the beginning. It should not exceed more than 200 characters, however 140 is recommended. You can repeat the description in a H1 tag just after the tag <body>.
METATAG <KEYWORDS>
List your keywords but don't exaggerate. Don't use irrelevant keywords and be sure they are present in the text of the page as well. Use 1-5 keywords. With more than 10 you will lose instead of gaining.
KEYWORD DENSITY
Try to keep the keyword density around 2-5%. You obtain the percentage dividing the number of times a keyword is shown by the number of words on the page.
POSITION OF THE KEYWORDS
Insert the keywords at the beginning of the page, in the middle and at the end. It will convince the search engines that your page talks about that subject.
NAMES OF IMAGES, "ALT" AND "TITLE"
Use your keywords in the "ALT" and "TITLE" tags of the images.
QUANTITY OF WORDS
Create pages that are not too short and not too long. Don't forget, your site is for the visitors and not for the search engines. Suggested words, 300.
BOLD AND ITALIC
Highlight in bold and italic your keywords. It improves the usability and give you some point of PR.
LINKS AND ANCHOR TEXT
Where possible, link using keywords and not simple image and links "Click here". Try and keep the keywords at the beginning. ie: <a href="main_keyword.html">Main Keyword</A>
PROXIMITY OF KEYWORDS
Use keywords and their variations close to each other. It helps to obtain better positioning for less used words.
names of downloadable files
Give a relevant name to files you offer for downloading. Use keywords in their names.
HTML CODE AND CONTENT
Keep the relation HTML - text as lower as possible. Don't format the text too much. Use external CSS and js.
STATIC OR DYNAMIC PAGES
Search engines will not index pages that include ID, SID or UID in their URL. A page like www.yourdomain.com.au/page.php?UID=3000 will not be present in the search engines. So be careful.
SIZE OF PAGES AND IMAGES
A page is usually not supposed to be bigger than 100k. Don't use images bigger than 50k where possible. Don't use more than 3-5 images per page. Try to keep the page size A4 where possible.
MISSPELLING AND ORTHOGRAPHIC ERRORS
Use here and there some misspelled words to capture traffic. But don't ruin your credibility because of this. Use them in the ALT tag of the images.
DON'T USE FRAMES
Search engines have difficulties indexing sites with frames. In our article about frames you will find some advice about optimising pages with frames, but consider that many search engines ignore frames completely. So eliminate frames as soon as possible.
LINKS TO THE HOME PAGE
Use links between your pages, in particular insert a link to the home page in every page of your site. At the same time, keep the navigation system as simple as possible.
