DMOZ, the Open Directory

Custom Search

At the very beginning of the Internet, the Open Directory Project (DMOZ) has always operated to create a useful resource to give information on subjects online.
To do so, DMOZ is controlled by nearly 10.000 editors, a group of volunteers worldwide.
DMOZ can be a winning weapon for your ranking. But being listed is not easy and not fast either. For many reasons, a site can take months before being listed.
It is also very important to follow the guideline of DMOZ or your site will never be listed.
An editor receives approximately 50 subscriptions a day. He/She will look at them when they have time to do it. They will find sites with title and description very well written. The editor will insert these sites first, the others will be put off until tomorrow.
And tomorrow they will have other 50 new sites...and the story repeats...

The main reasons to be listed are:

  • the pages with DMOZ results have a good PageRank
  • other directories, like Google, use data from DMOZ
  • Data from DMOZ are used by many search engines
  • A link from DMOZ is a link related to a specific subject

So, be careful when you submit your site. Give a good title to make it different and a very good description.
Your site will be listed only if it brings something good for people who navigate the Internet.

If your site has not been added to DMOZ in 4-6 weeks, don't start sending nasty e-mails asking "Why?".
Contact the editor and ask to review your site.
Don't sign up again! Your site would be at the very bottom of the list again.
Submit your site to the right category.
If after 6 weeks you have not been listed, then you can repeat the submission with a good title and a good description. A short one.
The title is usually the name of the business.
Being listed in DMOZ is good, but many top sites are not listed in DMOZ at all. Tags:DMOZ directory directories
